Adjusting transmission

I am having problems with my transmission engaging in forward on my c-27 Universal 18 with a hurth transmission. I have tried lengthening the cable at the adjustment on the arm on the transy, helped a little but still I need to "nurse" it to engage. Once engaged there is no slippage and the transmission does not seem hot. Fluid level is ok. Any ideas.

Have you disconnected the cable and tried shifting manually with the lever on the transmission? If things go well then, perhaps your cockpit lever is limited somehow in 'throw', making it difficult to fully engage the gear position. The cable will only reproduce the motion of the shifter..

Also make sure that the clamps on the cable are secure (both ends) so that you don't have any 'lost motion' in the assembly.

Limited range on the shift lever is kind of what I have been thinking. Unfortunately getting to the shift lever connection at the helm is going to be a chore as the bolts are frozen. I'll try movement from the other end.

Try PBlaster, found at most auto chains. It is not like WD40, it chemically breaks rust and nuts spin off like they were just installed. incredible stuff.
With any luck it is in the linkage, not rebuild time.

Thanks for the advice on the PB. Only 750 hr on the motor original with a folding prop so I would think or hope it is not a rebuild. It is bi--- to get to that area to work.

" It is bi--- to" If you think that's fun, wait till you try to locate replacement cables that match up to old boats.<G>

If it does just need adjustment and lube, lube the hell out of the cable while you're in there. These cables can always be replaced, the fun part is, getting lengths and ends to match up with the old ones.
