LadyH2: Totally depends on how much You want to roll up your sleeves & if You do enjoy (I do) getting out to see the sights while I shop. If it's a small group, definitely doable.
I've used Bobby's & Riteway (close to Sunsail/ Moorings...you can easily walk...taxi back with bags)

We are now three weeks away from our BVI bareboat trip and its time to get serious about provisioning. We have been looking at places like Bobby's and Riteway and having the provisions delivered to the boat. We were talking to some people last night however who had done the BVI trip and they mentioned there would be some significant savings by going to Bobbys or Riteway, once we arrived in Tortola and shopping youreself as opposed to shopping online. Has anyone experienced both...? is there a difference.?

If you really want high quality provisions... I would also recommend checking out the "Ample Hamper". Not cheap but REALLY good.

Even if you do most of your provisioning from Bobby's or Riteway...they are worth a visit for some treats.
Since it seems you will be in Roadtown, I will also suggest two other things:
1. Visit the Roti Palace for lunch. If you've never had a Roti..you will be in for a treat. (Try the boneless chicken!)
2. If you enjoy British food and treats...curries, jams, pasties, bangers, scotch pies etc. try the Best of British shop downtown near the water.

LH2 - Not sure I would agree with the word "significant".
You will have sticker shock compared to your local store no matter what since all the food is shipped in.
The question comes down to 1) Do you have the time 2) Do You want to go shopping yourself.
Some people think it's a waste of good vacation time or are rushed to start the charter, so it's worth the extra few $$$ but it does not cost 50% more to pre-order.

I always enjoy shopping on all the different islands especially when I can go to open fresh markets even when I can't speak the language (ie; french) as you really get to experience another side of the local culture.

However, You WILL save a ton buying from the grocery/liquor store(s) (online or in person) compared to provisioning from charter company.....maybe that's what they meant?
