NOAA Apparently a Political Advocate President Obama (Thomas Point Broken)

No funding, no data!!

Station TPLM2 is transmitting intermittently. The NOAA National Data Buoy Center has deferred annual maintenance for buoys and C-MAN stations in your region until further notice. We hope to resume maintenance of the coastal and offshore weather buoys and C-MAN network next year, pending full funding of the President's FY14 budget.

NDBC - Station TPLM2

Anyone find this politicization of navigation safety unseemly??

I think it they genuinely can not fix lighthouse data from being generated, they should ask for donations or volunteers.

That is a bit ridiculous. Nonpartisan government agencies are still partisan 8 guess.

That's the problem in our society. No one is willing to give up their individual ENTITLEMENT. Cuts are inevitable.

I am not going to get into the politics of it as that will spark a huge debate for a different thread posting in a different area.

The Thomas Point Light is still working as a navigational aid. There is no danger mariners in this cutback. Who cares that we don't have the data generated by it. It is not ESSENTIAL. Nice to have maybe for interests sake, but not essential service.

The prudent mariner should be able to sail safely using any and all resources. TPL is just one way of getting the information that you need. Not to say that it isn't useful to be able to click on the light on my electronic chart and know what's going on at that spot, but I can still be safe without it.

I like having access to buoy data, but have access to many other sources as well. One may think, however, that several of them key off the same data point. I have been noticing some very incorrect wind forecasting lately. More than usual.

But, anyone that thinks that politics was not fully involved in what was chosen for cuts, has their head in the sand.

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Re: NOAA Apparently a Political Advocate President Obama (Thomas Point Broken)

Is this data a NEED or a WANT? While I would argue airport approach markers are a need, this NOAA data is nice and contributes to safety but is needed. And budgets are like that; everybody NEEDS what they want, which explains a lot of personal and federal finance.

Funny, last time I looked it was FY13 now - why does FY14 funding impact a broken buoy today?
Quit whining here and send a email to your representatives about the inappropriate political statement on a agency website.

Yep--And the IRS NEEDS to spend $50,000,000 on Line Dancing and "conferences" for employees at luxury hotels with $5000 per night "Presidential" suites (in honor of his Majestic Obamanation no doubt) for mid-level bureaucrats that work, on average 27 hours a week, just as the GSA NEEDS to spend $10,000,000 per year on similar conferences for their over-paid, under worked, employees, all very supportive Democrats, just as....etc. etc. etc. All while the nations infrastructure fails for want of maintenance/upkeep.
