Car falls from Chesapeake Bay Bridge
..I cross this bridge quite often on my motorcycle and love the lanes closest to the railings so I can watch the boats...

Woman SURVIVES after car is knocked off Chesapeake Bay Bridge - a bridge so scary people pay $25 for a professional to drive them across | Mail Online

... besides I'll only charge 10 bucks for those who want to cross in style in my motorcycle with side car..:laugher

I don't think she drove into the bay, I think the tractor trailer pushed her over the jesery wall....big difference ;)

Re: Car falls from Chesapeake Bay Bridge
4 or 5 years ago, the same eastbound span was open to two way traffic. A car crossed the centerline hit a tractor trailer going the opposite way. The trucker's steering wheels were damaged, he lost control went through the Jersey barrier after hitting it nearly head on. He was killed in the crash after the truck plunged to the bay. The other other driver, injured was drunk and awaiting trail on a previous DUI. A mini controversy ensued when bridge engineers had no good explanation as to why trucks were allowed on the bridge if the Jersey Barriers weren't strong enough to keep them from going over in a crash. Had the barrier done it's job the trucker likely would have survived. I don't know the outcome, whether the barrier system was beefed up or whether they just washed their hands of it.

I too love riding over the western span on my motorcycle. The open guard rail is pretty cool!!!

Re: Car falls from Chesapeake Bay Bridge
The barriers were attached by very rusty and corroded bolts. They were all replaced and it caused a lot of traffic jams.

I used to drive over that bridge often back when I lived in DC. I was always afraid of that happening to me. I told myself it was an irrational fear. I guess it wasn't.

Re: Car falls from Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Weird though that the car got airbourne enough to go over.

I only worry about bridges like this one in fog. First, don't wanna repeat of the Sunshine Skyway incident where the bridge is rammed by a ship. Second, and this goes doublely so on the motorcycle, i worry about getting rammed from behind. I usually slow down only slightly depending on how good or bad the vis is. But if there is slower moving traffic it forces me to slow to unsafe speeds for a high speed roadway. There is no such thing as a fender bender on a motorcycle.
