Re: Pirates Weekend in Rock Hall

I have found it fun;I don't tend to take these things very seriously. Love the old sea chanteys and the swordfighting demos.

For those who don't "get" the fascination with pirates: I think people - whether they're office workers rebelling against their gray cubicles, or children hooked on the image of swashbucklers making their own rules - are attracted to the romance of sailing ships, and legends, because the Disney version of pirates takes these guys out of context.

Dan's and my job, when we're in our historical-maritime-reenactor mode, is to put pirates back IN historical context. We take kids fascination as the starting point, and talk about the societal forces that bred pirates (both the Golden Age legends and Somali pirates of today), the science of navigation that they had back then, their role in the American revolution, the roles of women, the list goes on. Its all fun and games ... with a purpose.

A 'Pirate is a Pirate'..no matter if one is brandishing a sword, an A 47 or a computer...However Hollywood has made it a fad..

I still stand by my comment here:

Pirates and Wenches Festival, Rock Hall

..now go ply the waters off Somalia and see if one would still 'drink Pirate tea'..

The Pirate Report

I wonder what the surviving Capt. of this vessel would comment....

U.S. crew retakes ship, but captain hostage - World news - Africa - Somalia | NBC News

..or better yet..whom would get a cheer first if these rescueing individuals showed up at Pirate Fest?

Warner Brother now 'gets it'..

..on a lighter note...

aa3jy, you are preaching to the choir with Jaye. She does say that she and Dan take the opportunity to put them into historical (not Disneyfied) context.

Some don't get it...

Promoting Piracy thru fun and games is like 'promotional spinning' Cambodian's Khmer Rouge as a bunch of 'choir boys going to a church social'...

Lets end the charade and call a 'spade a spade'..thugs and mass murders shouldn't be placed on a 'stage' as nothing more then entertainment...

End Piracy Not promote it

Re: Pirates Weekend in Rock Hall

By the time the kids have reached the age where they know Santa Claus is a fable, they have also figured out the difference between real pirates (bad guys) and playing "pirate." The distinction is even in the name of the town's event - they call it the fantasy festival.

But here's what I mean about using the current fascination with pirates to get the kid's attention and spring to other lessons. As part of putting pirates in historical context, we also get the kids to think about nuances such as the difference between pirates and privateers. Not that there is much difference between the two to the recipient, but if not for the privateers, our revolutionary war could have had a very different outcome - we might still be British. How do you think our ragtag band of 13 colonies went up against the mightiest naval power of their time?

While I understand your point (in your posts), the simple fact of the matter is, fantasy or otherwise, it celebrates pirate culture. I can easily imagine the outrage at a SS Stormtrooper Fantasy Weekend, or KKK, or any number of such groups.

Re: Pirates Weekend in Rock Hall

Think it would be possible to have the Natual Resources Police to play the part of the Oyster Police, actually their predecessors, in this..?

..now I understand that this bit of Marland history was one hell of a war right here on the Eastern Shore and I'm sure a few would want to forget...

On another note..there has been an indication that this years event will be more under the watchfull eye of the local, County and State LEOs' in the form of DUI and speeding that this event now draws...

So watch your pronunciation of 'Arrrrr ye Matey' with a cup of ye favorite grog while plying the streets of Rock Hall..
