Exclamation Dobbin's Island Battle

Saw in todays Philly paper that the new owner has put Dobbins Island (High tide water and up) off limits to the general boating community with a chained fence

All tho I have not anchored there in several years.. I used to sail out of the Magothy and have many happy memories playing on that island. I was sad to hear this and feel its a loss for alot of people in favor of the ego of some as*hole. Personally I hope the county never approves the building of a home on it and it returns to public enjoyment.

Gee...too bad...someone fenced off his property so the general public can't use it or sue him if they get injured stepping on a pop top. If private property should be free for use...I'm coming over for dinner and jumping in your pool! ...which is probably sitting on land that once was "free for all"!

Dobbins Island or TAK's boat?

Or, we could all just go play on TAK's boat, I mean he has no ego, right? So it shouldn't be a problem. Oh, he won't be there? Even better, if we wreck it, he won't know who did the damage, and if one of us claims we got injured, he won't be able to testify in court whether we did or not.
LOL....Give the guy a break TAK. He's just covering his ass.

Plan on going to Dobbins Island in 2 weeks

I am doing a charter and wanted to anchor out one night at Dobbins Island. Never been there and was wondering if anyone has any feedback. what is the bottom like there? Is it a decent place to go? Not really looking to go on shore although it would have been nice. Is it still off limits?

By the way I am a fairly new sailor and this is about my 4th charter.

If you like powerboats and everything that comes with it...anchor there, There's good depth of 8'-10' pretty close to shore with good holding bottom, and you'll need it.

If you don't like that picture, keep going around Gibson Island and anchor in/near Hawks Cove. Sailor Mitch, help me out here. Much quieter and calmer waters.

Thanks. I was looking at the one over by I think it was called Purdy point on the other side of Gibbson Island. It sounded like Dobbins Island had more romm to swing. I also thought it there wouldn't be a crowd on a Monday evening. What do you think?

You'll see...

Monday evening may not be to bad, however you're still going to get allot of boat traffic. You can make the call when you get there...

Hey Chef! The cove you are talking about at the northern end of Gibson Island is known as Eagle's Cove, at least to my sailing club. It's a V-shaped notch at the top of the island and is much preferable to anchoring behind Dobbins Island IMHO. If that cove is crowded, keep going around to the east and there's another place to anchor as well. My sailing club has a rendezvous shceduled for Eagle's Cove the weekend of July 21.

GlenK -- As Chef said, Dobbins can be busy and rolling. It's also a powerboat magnet. But a Monday night should be OK traffic wise. There also are a couple of creeks off the Magothy that are good anchorages and might be better than Dobbins.
