Exclamation Deep Creek Lock Times

I just came through Deep Creek Lock on the Dismal Swamp route. I tied up at the Elizabeth Dock (free) between the bridge and the lock and had coffee with Robert. He want to get the message out:

CONTRARY TO WHAT YOU READ IN SKIPPER BOB

If there is no Southbound traffic the Northbound lock opening is at 8:30 AM, 11 AM, 1:30 PM, 3:30 PM. The lock does not wait as if there had been Southbound traffic. This means that you need to be at the bridge at the appropriate times assuming that there is no southbound traffic. Otherwise if you arrive at 11:30 etc. you may find that you will have to wait for the next locking time.

Fair winds and following seas

Even if you contact the lock master and tell him you are coming?

Yes. He is restricted by his employer to only opening the lock and bridge 4 times per day. If you are close (like 5 minutes out) he might wait. But if you are 1/2 hour out he can't.

Re: Deep Creek Lock Times

The Dismal Swamp Canal locks use the same attendant to operate the nearby bridge, which is allowed to open only 4 times a day. So inbound boats (if any) lock up and idle to the bridge while the lock operator gets into his truck and drives to the bridge. Inbound and outbound boats pass under the bridge, then outbound boats get to lock down, once the attendant drives back to the lock.
