Live Aboard Locations

I'm considering buying a boat for a live aboard. I work in DC, but am willing to live near or South of Annapolis. I also have two kids (5 and 3) that are with me a couple of times per month. I'm wondering about locations that allow live aboards, are commutable to DC, and have some kid friendly activities either at the Marine or nearby. Ideas w/contact phone numbers?

South of Annapolis

You might want to try Deale, MD

Commuting to DC from Annapolis will be a bear. If you are not outside of DC heading home east on Rt 50 by 330-345pm expect it to take an hour and a half. If you are at one of the marina's that are a goodly hike south from Rt 50 once you get to the town (such as Jabin's or Port Annapolis down Arlis T. Allen Blvd) that can be very, slow in addition to the rest of the commute.

Deale will be shorter, although the commute in the morning can be long as Rt 4 is mostly 2 lanes each way. (For some reason it is not as much a factor outbound in the afternoon.) In Deale try Herrington Harbor North and Shipwright. Herrington South is a possibility but will add 15-20mins to the commute.

Annapolis is a busy town with lots happening whereas Deale has a mom & pop grocery, 7-11, Subway, and not a whole lot else, if that matters.

Thanks again

Trekka,

Thanks for the information. I currently live in Passadena so am aware of the Rt 50 nightmare. I was very interested in locations South of Annapolis. Sounds like Deale is the best shot. I would probably be happier in Annapolis...for the night life. Do you know if any of the Marinas in Annapolis allow live aboards? It seems like most don't.

Port Annapolis Marina, 7074 Bembe Beach Road, allows liveaboards. DC phone number is 301-261-1999. Bert Jabin's Yacht Yard, 7310 Edgewood Road, allows liveaboards. DC phone number is 301-261-1788.

Holiday Hill marina allows liveaboards (there are a few there right now). It's in Mayo, MD - south of Annapolis, though Rt. 50 is still the best way out of there (but you could also go southward and the same way as the one from Deale).

I'm amazed by the number. When I originally put out feelers, the marinas I spoke to said, "no live aboards." After talking to some of the folks who use the facilities, the truth came out...the official policy is no live aboards, but once you're in...the rules are adjusted. Truth be told, I don't own a boat yet, but have this overwhelming desire to simplify my life. Don't know if buying a live aboard would necessarily do that. I am in the market for a mid-30's to low 40's sailboat. I've some sailing expierence (Magothy, Severn, Narragansett) but am no means an expert. If you'd like to offer some advice, look for my upcoming posts in "buying a boat" and "living aboard." Thanks to all who have answered my original post thus far. Cliff
