2008 govenor's cup

Is there a site where I can get more information on this race? All I can find is registration fees and info about last year's and earlier. Anyone here plan on competing in it?

The information below is from an article about the 2007 Governor's Cup race. I think if you contacted the number listed or sent an e-mail, they might be able to give you some information on the 2008 race.

Registration for the race is now open. To request a form, call 240-895-3039, e-mail govcup@smcm.edu, fax 240-895-4484 or visit the Web site http://www.smcm.edu/govcup. The registration fee is $75 per boat. Housing at the College and a bus ride back to Annapolis is also available.

It's probably way too early to find something on the 2008 race, other than the date for it. It's been a very popular bay race for years, although participation is way down (as it is for all racing these days.) It can be a long slog if the winds are light -- or a blast if the winds are good. I've participated in it many times, but not in the last 5 years or so. Overnight distance races aren't necessarily for me anymore, but I'd do it again if the right opportunity came along.

In general, the winds can be OK in the bay proper going down, but tend to die when you turn up the Potomac and then again into the St. Mary's River. It's a major social event on land once down there -- if you don't just collapse for a nap on the hill.

I was out on the potomac last year on my friends boat when I saw the racers returning. If I can't find a boat to crew for then I'll probably take my own. Don't plan on placing well, just having a good time.

A shorter race to consider, held in July, is the Naptown to Solomon's race. It's the excuse to get boats to sail to Solomon's for race week down there. Shorter and also a good party once you get there.

But you have the right attitude about the Gov Cup -- have some fun and let the results take care of themselves.

My sailing buds here on the bay would get a kick out of seeing me (dedicated cruiser) write about racing.
