While it is tempting to stay aboard to take care of the boat...the reality is that there is little you can do once the winds get above 100 and there is great danger.
In Ivan, we were next to a couple in a steel schooner who decided to stay aboard. They were broken loose from the dock and knocked down flat and ended up well on shore across the harbor. It was only luck that prevented their boat from being impaled on some steel pilings that sunk several other boats. In the same storm, we finally talked our good friends to get off their boat..a Shannon 49...which was subsequently washed onto the reefs and totaled. Three other sailors were not so lucky as one was hit with his boom and died making on deck adjustments and the others were found washed up on the beach and drowned.

Get off the boat...nothing is worth your life.
