For the record, we will still swim. Just shower afterwards and don't ladle it into your mouth.

Interestingly, I was talking to a friend who grew up on Lake Michigan. He said when he was a kid, the water was a stinky brown. Now it's clear as crystal because of the zebra mussels. No one wants those, but it does illustrate how getting the oyster population (filter feeders) could make a difference.

In the 60s and 70s we swam in the Elk river (North Bay) all the time!!

Sure it stank, but we were kids and didn't care!!

Surfing on wakes from passing tankers.

Aberdeen booming off in the distance.

We didn't know better!!

Reminds me of the old George Carlin bit about swimming in the East River as a kid in NYC. "We swam in raw sewage." Good for your immune system - give it a workout once in a while to keep it in shape.

I used to swim in the Chesapeake as a kid, but the last time I was in it was over 30 years ago. We're about to buy a sailboat and plan to do lots of cruising with my kids on the Bay. After reading all this, I'm having second thoughts about jumping back in...

So sad that our waters are so polluted that people are afraid to even to swim in them.

I have a Nettle Net (nojellyfish.com) and I think it's great. It does go a bit oblong if there is a current or the boat is swinging much on the hook. Still, I would purchase it again. I hate the idea of not being able to swim for half the summer or more.
