Dr. Nichols passed away
I'm not sure if the Chesapeake Sailing community was aware of Dr. David Nichols, but he is a near legend among the residents of the lower mid-bay, especially Tangier Island. Dr. Nichols visited the island as a youngster, and decided to become a Doctor so he could care for the residents of the island.
After becoming an MD, Dr. Nichols provided care to the residents of Tangier for nearly 3 decades, flying himself to the island every week in his helicopter. He also lead the effort to build a new medical clinic to replace the dilapidated building that had served as the islanders only medical office. When faced with terminal Cancer, Dr. Nichols associated his practice with a medical group so that Tangier residents will continue to have weekly access to medical care on the island in the new medical clinic that bears his name.
Dr. Nichols passed away at home on December 30th. His legacy is yet another thread in the amazing tapestry of Chesapeake Bay history.
