Depending on state of current in the C&D canal it takes me somewhere between 17 and 22 hours from Annapolis to Cape Henlopen.

Than go for the light air sail to Cambridge. You'll have the time and challenge to push your limits and learn from them at the end of every tack up the river. You'll learn the value of a depth sounder as a navigation tool. Heck - St Michaels might be even better if you sail all the way in.

Just thinking.

Ha..... Needed change plan. Had to go back to office for half day before heading out. Wife decided to join me. Got to marina at 4 pm. Very light wind. Sail to TP light but had to motor back. Picked a mooring ball in front of chart house. Wife made crab imperial with pasta. Relaxing on deck.

Comfortable night with shower on and off, got up at 8 am and head south. No wind less than 5 kn.
Slowly motored to knapp narrow. The traffic is very light but the watermen were busy with their work. I would love to spend a few days shadowing with them. I love their hard working life style.

We are heading to Cambridge now. Wind blows less the 1 kn. We continue to motor. According to the guidebook there are free docking in front of the Dorchester county building.

But google yields no results. Anyone know where it is? Is it inside Cambridge creek at the end of commerce street?

Been wanting to do Cambridge for a while, so let us know your thoughts of the town. Any possibilities of anchoring in the harbor, or is a slip the only option there?

Cambridge is certainly a worthy visit. It has a number of good restaurants with good rating. However, we did not eat in. You saw a lot working boats and Clayton crab processing plant as you enter the harbor on your right.

J.M. Clayton Seafood Company

We visit the place and get some crab and crab meat (lump meat for $20 a lb) is very good price. I asked the lady in the office how do I go about to get a job picking crab, she said I must pick at least 3 dozen per hour in order to get a job there which is a bout one crab for every 1.6 min. Asking if I can eat crab while picking the meat; she replied with a big no. I asked if there is an employee discount, she said no. So I guess I am not going to get a job there then.

I went over the picking station. Looking at our pickup ticket, it was witting in Spanish. All the pickers are female, most of them are Spanish speaking, some older AA and a few Filipinos. They are all hard at work. I hope their children and grandchildren are school and doing well to reach their American dreams.

Picking crab is hard work, I gained a lot more appreciation after seeing how it was done. I watched them to work with curiosity, they all smiled. I made a gesture of feeding me some crab meat, they're all laughing. It looks like they are all happy and enjoy their work.

On the side of Route 50 by the bridge, there were too many closed down restaurants from fast food to family types. I guess it must be the signs of the time.

I believe that you can drop anchor in the Cambridge Creek, it is well protected and has the depth (just in front of Snapper Restaurant). Since it was weekday, we moored our boat by the bulkhead just in front the Dorchester County Building. At the lowest tide, it was 6 ft, so it is plenty of our. There are enough room for at least 5 boats from the condo side to Snapper Restaurant.

As we were heading to Cambridge from Knapps Narrow, there is a Cambridge Light (not sure the name), please stay far north of it. I approached it too close, it took less than 30 sec from 37 ft to 3.9 ft. I love my reverse. Hahaha.......... Not harm was done, except stirred up some dirt.

Yesterday, the wind was very light. I sailed as much as I could. But it ended up motoring a lot. While I had a good time in the bay, but I heart for more off-shore passage sailing where I find comfort, challenge, satisfaction and peace.

Could not able to sail to Cape May this time, I will plan on doing it next time when I have a three day slot.

Not owning a boat do suck.

Thanx for the writeup on Cambridge; it's on our list - we have some free time beginning 7/7 - sounds like something we should try!

Glad you like it. If you are planning to go thru Knapps Narrow, stay on the south side (starboard) as you enter the Narrows form the Bay. The Marsh side has NO water. Don't ask me how did I know?

I will post a few pics later for the Cambridge harbor to show the landmark for future reference.

There is room for a number of boats to anchor in Cambridge Creek; it fills up on weekends and holidays. There is dockage right in front of Snappers - I think we paid something the last time we were there but got a discount for using the restaurant. I haven't used the town bulkhead.

I've also anchored out in the Choptank in the corner between the channel and the bridge and off the yacht club. If you don't mind a longish dinghy ride La Trappe Creek is beautiful.

We have family in Cambridge so may not be objective - it is one of our favorite destinations.

In light air it has taken me up to 30 hours to get there!

If you do the Delaware River route, and want some excitement, try Lewes and do a U turn in the canal by the town dock.
There's fine dining a block from the dock, and everything in between.
