In addition, it's important to realize that you need to prepare the lines in a manner that allows you to adjust them during a storm if you are able. Imagine these stainless steel pipes as pilings. In the first photo there is no way to adjust the line under tension. In the second photo, with intial wraps, you can untie the line and let out an amount or even take in line when the boat gives you slack at a roll.



Of course this only works for pilings that you can reach from the dock, so you might want to adjust a line under tension from a cleat. Here again, you can not adjust the line cleated in the first photo, but you can adjust the one in the second photo.
