Thank you! I have to keep the First Mate grounded for now. You have to make decisions based on realities and not emotion... Lol

Re: Question on offers and surveyors...

I used Gary Kerr (gekker at msn dot com / 410-382-9571) for my survey last year. He was very thorough, seemed knowledgeable and most importantly was available on short notice. Think he charged me $20 a foot.

No, he didn't go up the mast. Just looked at it with binoculars and checked the rigging tension.

Re: Question on offers and surveyors...

Most of the surveyors I talked with two years ago would not go up the mast unless mast steps were installed, and some just would not go up at all. The guy I used was James Reihl, who is AMMS certified and did an outstanding job. He went into areas that I would have never tried to access, found things that saved me lots of money and lots of grief and charged $15/ft. He works out of Rock Hall, MD and can be reached at nwmarinesurvey@live.com

Good Luck,

Gary

Re: Question on offers and surveyors...

The survey went well. He didn't go up the mast, but was very responsive with all the questions I asked. I'm glad that he didn't charge by the question instead of the foot. Lol

He said that it was a good Catalina 27 and would make a great starter boat. There was a small crack in the hull forward of the propeller shaft. The owner said he would have the folks who installed the drip less shaft seal repair the crack and find out how it happened. There were some minor things, but overall pretty good. The keel and the hull (minus the crack) was solid. The rigging will need tuned before we splash for the sea trial.

Re: Question on offers and surveyors...

The trigger has been pulled... I'm the proud owner of a old (new to me) boat that has been maintained pretty well. I decided to leave it at Herrington Harbor North in Deale, MD. I really enjoy that area and the sailing possibilities.

The one thing a can't believe is nobody told me boats are worse than Harley Davidson's when it comes to constant upgrades... I'm going to get stock in West Marine I think...

Hope to see you guys out and about. Fair Winds...

Forget the upgrades, the repairs will get your wallet, too.

Best of luck with your boat.

Dave,

You will definitely see some pictures from this weekend... It looks like we'll have some decent wind.

Donna,

It seems that way with the things that "just" need routine maintenance. Not counting the the things that will ultimately fail.
