Cape Lookout NC

Can anyone give me an update on the anchoring conditions in the Cape Lookout Bight? Haven't been out there in years, but I'm planning trip for Labor Day weekend. I'll be on a Beneteau 343 and will not have a dinghy on this trip so I'm curious if you can still anchor close enough to the beach to have a comfortable swim in and out to use the beach.

I'm interested in hearing any info too since we're moving the boat to NC next spring and that anchorage looks interesting. Wonder how crowded it gets and how much protection it offers? Our boat draws close to 6 ft.

Lancelot,
since you and I seem to be the only ones interested....I stopped in at Beaufort on a recent trip through and talked to several people. The most informative was the captain of the Lookout Cruise Cat, who happens to be an old friend. The bight has not changed much over the years and it seems that anchoring in close is no problem, especially out near the end. I'll still plan on moving out a little before nightfall just to be safe. As far as traffic, I was told to expect a little day traffic but very little company at night, except for holiday weekends. Protection is very good as you can anchor behind a lee shore in most winds. The only question for me is how much Irene will change things if the forecast holds? I'll post back after our trip and let you know.

Active Captain has quite a few current reviews on the anchorage at Cape Lookout Bight.
