Cockpit Sole Reinforcement

I have been meaning to post, and this already may be a "given"- last time the boat was out of the water and while doing a goodly amount of work to the hull (glassed in all thru-hulls save for the cockpit drain) I installed a 2x3 in the middle-ish portion under the cockpit sole, spanning athwartships between the locker walls, lag-bolting from inside the lockers, utilizing some 5200 and wood shims to fill in gaps and it has been a great help in "flex" of the sole and is much stronger, currently.

Hope this helps another Challenger/24 owner that weighs more than 100 lbs!

BTW- if anyone want to daysail, in SoCal area, I am out in the San Pedro Channel around 35 times a year (most Sundays).

Re: Cockpit Sole Reinforcement

What kind of wood did you use? Did you glass it in, seal it or leave it bare?

Re: Cockpit Sole Reinforcement

I just used a scrap piece of doug fir (pine), "on end", bare, but it could be glassed in, or a different species of wood used, if ambitious. That area under the sole stays pretty dry. The only other recommendation I should offer up is that I angle-cut the ends just a a couple of degrees to match the taper, looking down, of the sole. It was all pretty easy and very effective.

Hope this helps.

Re: Cockpit Sole Reinforcement

I would seal it up well. At a minimum, I would coat with penetrating epoxy, if out of direct sunlight.

Re: Cockpit Sole Reinforcement

Huffboat: Your approach sounds much better than many of the facockta "solutions" that sailnetters offered when you originally inquired.
