Columbia 36 Modifications - Storage
As with most of the early Columbias that I have seen, there is a LOT of storage space. The only problem is that you can't get to any of it. More specifically there are a lot of large areas that are behind the fiberglass walls that are just empty space.
I have seen some owners that have cut out and installed cabinets in places, and some places where owners have just installed wood doors where they have cut out so that they could access the spaces between the hull and the inner walls. We could probably double the storage space available if we were to cut out and install cabinets where there are none.
Has anyone else here done this? If so, have you noticed any adverse effects in the rigidity of the boat? I know the joined parts of the boat come together in a way to increase the rigidity and strength, so I would not want to compromise that. I also know that, as with my 1969, the early boats were over-built because the engineers were still ironing out the strength of the materials they used.
