New boat owner looking for day ride PNW

I just bought a boat Cal29, looking to crew a day sail to learn the ropes. I have no experience, 46yr old in fit condition. I've been on the water in my 21ft power boat for years. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd kill for a sail in the PNW, but I'm on the East Coast!

I have a Cal 2-27, and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Really solid boat. One suggestion: you might get more out of it if you invite someone to sail on your boat instead of you sailing on theirs.

The "PNW" is a big area... you might want to be a bit more specific

Wow, they don't exaggerate the cloud cover in the PNW, do they? I want to run for cover just looking at that sky. Congratulations on the boat.

In your shoes I would hire a private sailing instructor and learn on your new boat. I know everyone says offer to crew to learn to sail, but in my experience most skippers are looking for experienced crew. (Or will take a chance on you if you seem like you'd be good sport on board).

Re: New boat owner looking for day ride PNW

You might consider buffing out the gelcoat rather than painting. From that photo it looks like only the top stripe is likely too far gone. Painting is a lot more to maintain in the long run.

I'd recommend classes, I think you'll get more out of them than ad-hoc learning while out with others and it will force you to learn safety things like man overboard rescues. The SailNow class at the Center for Wooden Boats could be a good match because you already have motor docking skills down (which is a big part of ASA 10x classes). SailNow only teaches sailing (the boats are motorless keel boats) and does a good job of teaching sail trim and handling. They have classes on Camano Island (Cama Beach) which sounds like it might be a better location for you.

Private instruction also sounds like a good option, and there are many private instructors in the area.

Someone in the past painted over the gel coat sadly...

Looks like just the cove stripe was painted, that's easily redone with Brightsides.
