Captain a Worldwide Expedition!

Imagine a geography assignment that lets kids roam the globe in search of interesting places and learn about the people who live there. That’s exactly the case for many students who attend under-funded public schools in New York City. Reach the World (RTW), a New York City-based nonprofit, offers exciting, online journeys to elementary and middle schools in low-income communities. These journeys connect students to the world in a meaningful way, train educators how to teach with technology, and enhance traditional textbook geography and other subjects.

In December 2004, RTW launched its third around-the-world Voyage of Makulu, a 43-foot ketch. This journey is dedicated to the thousands of young “virtual voyagers” who follow the journey from their classrooms. Over the course of three years, Makulu will travel 30,000 miles around the world, stopping in more than 30 nations. On board, five crewmembers serve as ‘eyes and ears in foreign ports for students and teachers’, responding to teachers’ requests for information and engaging in interactive activities with students.

RTW’s expedition crewmembers sign full-time, school-year contracts (September – June) to serve on board the Voyage. RTW is currently advertising the job of Captain / Expedition Leader for Year 2 of Makulu’s worldwide voyage (route: Australia to the Mediterranean via the Red Sea). All crew positions, including Captain, pay an $8,000 stipend annually and provide health coverage. Living expenses are fully covered by Reach the World.

Qualifications: passion for education, team-building skills, excellent writing ability. USCG Captain’s license or equivalent is required for the Captain position.

Employment start date: mid-August. For more information about RTW, visit
