Crossing the Pacific

Just wondering what the most common route might be for cruisers headed for the south pacific (Australasia) from the west coast of America?

Go South till it gets warmer and turn right.
Go 2000 nm and when the wind dies down kick
on the old diesel and take a left.
Just follow the sun west, that will be
on your right, from there till you hit
a beach where they speak english.

you know, that would be just about enough info to get you there, but I think that there is a missing instruction from where you turn left, to where you follow the sun West (and are in the Southern Hemisphere). After the left turn, you should be heading South again....
