Long Island Sound to Brunswick GA - Feb/March?
I have secured the delivery of a Privilege 37 catamaran, from somewhere in Long Island Sound to Brunswick Ga.
1997 Privilege 37, recent survey - should be in seaworthy shape
Long Island Sound to Brunswick GA
Route uncertain, dependent upon weather. Expect a 10-16 day trip, including 2 prep days and 1 cleanup day.
Need 2-3 crew. must all be experienced offshore, must send resumes and references.
NO per diem pay
Food PAID - NO crew contribution
Transportation to and from the boat are HALF (50%) PAID
USCG Master, 100 Tons
professional sailboat captain
36 years experience, 50,000 miles
familiar with route and harbors along the way
easy going, personable
Dates UNCERTAIN - boat is getting surveyed the week of Feb 13, then will need a closing for transfer of ownership. Then the delivery can happen. Trying to get the departure date to be 2/25, but that COULD get pushed to 3/25.

Really?? Asking experienced crew to pay their own transportation?
If your getting paid it's pretty low asking your crew to also pay.
Do your clients know your using novice crew on their "paid" deliveries?
Why don't you try asking your doctor to see you for free?

i certainly do not trust my life to novices. and it's the owners, after all, who do not want to pay crew, isn't it?
everyone does what they have to do. i have taken plenty of free crew on many trips. all are glad to get away and be out there. their make their money back home - most times far more than we are making in this scrappy business. i am happy to make these trips available to these great - and grateful - persons. and happy to sail with these knowledgeable and experienced sailors. i certainly do not trust my life to novices. and
by the way, for all those who do not know about spirit airlines: yesterday they had many dates with fares from STT to MIA for $63-$124, one way. i've flown them before myself - far cheaper than american airlines!

i see VERY FEW paying positions on this site at all - with no airfares paid also. not on sailnet and findacrew as well. do members really send their "Really?" replies to all those postings too?
as i said, many persons working in the cold of winter are thrilled to come along. i'm happy to give them that opportunity. this is not exactly a cold, treacherous trip - watching a radar for 6 hours a day in shorts and a t-shirt, listening to an ipod and eating well for free, is pretty darn easy to take.
my mother used to say "if you don't have something nice to say...don't say it." how wonderful forums would be if that were the case, huh?
On return deliveries from Bermuda, is fairly common that the skipper is paid, sometimes a mate, and the rest ride free.
I understand that people protest when conditions are outrageous. Like when crew are asked to actually pay for doing a miserable trip (ICW in January), or when their duties include heavy cleaning, boat maintenance etc. Or, worst of all, when there are serious doubts about suitability of captain and/or boat.
But contributing half of their own transportation cost when the trip, boat and captain all are apparently good seems very reasonable to me.
Jim - I have to agree with "Really?". When I was building sea time for my master license I crewed many times for free, going up and down the East coast to gain the experience and offshore sea time necessary to obtain the license. Now that I have it, I feel the time and effort involved merits some compensation and travel expenses for my efforts, knowledge and the responsibility involved with a safe and uneventful boat delivery. I'm assuming your not doing it for free - why wouldn't you insist that the boat owners do the right thing pay for the better experienced crew to take his or her boat offshore? You'd only be helping to better the delivery business in the long run.
I am grateful for captains like Jim who have taken me on as crew on deliveries. I don't do it for the money, but the time at sea. I have crewed on many off-shore passages for both delivery skippers and owners. All have required that i provide a resume and references. So I think it works for everyone.
