Re: Need one hand willing to work for travel from Northeast to Southwest

Otimistically, an 1800nm sail. Meaning more like 2200nm allowing for tacking. In a boat capable of maybe 5 knots, ignoring any adverse currents. Hmmm....The only way that works out to 18 days is IF you have perfect weather (won't happen for 18 days this time of year) AND you're sailing 24x7, which is unlikely with just two and with an old boat that, no offense to your aunt, hasn't been setrialed for a major offshore run.

I'm guessing with weather delays and whatnot, four weeks. Three at the best. And that's assuming you have a desalinator aboard, because there's no way you'll stow three weeks worth of water on that boat, forget about the food. And if you don't carry it all on the boat--there goes your schedule, because you can't just pop in and out of places to reprovision on that trip, not unless you add lots more miles and time.

I admire the Great Adventure, but suspect you'd better make sure you and your crew have six weeks available "just in case". And if things go too slowly, forget rounding Florida and take the Okeechobee canal across to cut off another week.

Check with the Corp. Of Eng. re. the Okeechobee Waterway, a couple of the locks have been closed for maintainance this summer. I would plan for 4-6 weeks for the trip, and smell a couple roses.

If you don't have an Epirb or a PLB, stay within range of your VHF. If you hug the coast, you can get fuel, water, avoid the gulf stream and be able to find cover in case of storm. We just had some wicked storms with 60+ mph winds. Thunderstorms are the norm off the coast of Florida. Theres always a cold beer and guest room here if you need it. 34.39'34"N 77.03'12"W. Good luck.

First congrats on the new boat. I had a '76 Newport 28 you will love the way she sails and handles rough conditions. BUT if everything is original -I'm gonna guess yes- then you have a bit of work to do before you want to do anything of the offshore nature. She will do that trip nicely if you stay close or on the ICW. I assume it has an A-4, get to now her well if in good shape they run great and are easy to fix. Did I mention Spare Parts. I would agree with most of the other comments/ suggestions that have been given especially on the time required to make this great adventure. I can tell you for fact that from the Chessy to Key West that time of yr on the inside with no weather days it will take you 2 1/2 to 3 wks.
So go on that great adventure have fun and fair winds, just prepare, prepare, prepare and don't rush. We don't want to read about you, except that you made it and still want to sail.

Point is: Have an adventure with an exit strategy.

Re: Need one hand willing to work for travel from Northeast to Southwest

I did miss your point! I just hate to see so many people not doing something because the situation could be more ideal. I remember reading Buler's book and he said something along these lines... If I didn't have marine plywood I would build a boat out of regular plywood. It's not a verbatum quote but I like what he was getting at. Anyway you guys get back to the subject of this thread, I don't think the OP was looking for advice, as I recall he was looking for a hand.
