We don't plan on moving there, but if we did that would be the place we would end up.
The red line above is the route we took from the boatyard to Pelican Bay about 25 miles and there is deep water (by FL standards) in almost the whole bay on that route and also east over to Punta Gorda. We like the area and also the west coast south to 10,000 Islands and the Everglades and on to the Keys. We haven't gone north from there yet. You have more or less protected water in the whole bay and then the Gulf is very close.
Lots of homes on canals, but a number are not deep enough for any kind of draft.
Charlotte Harbor is shallow but great for sailing with care of depths.
Stayed last year at Fishermens Village Marina. Excellent marina, great service, great location. Excellent for live aboards. Good access to the Gulf in three or four hours. Most popular destination is Pelican Bay, close to Cayo Costa State Park and Boca Grande Pass.
With a chartplotter, you have plenty of room for good sailing; you just need to be careful. I have 4'6 draft on my Hunter and never needed....SeaTow !!!!
There is a say in the area: if you never got towed, you are either a liar or you don't get out....
One more thing, forget swimming in the harbor and there is no beach around; not that the water is dirty but simply dark brown...
The anchorage off Cayo Costa is great. Cabbage Key is a great place to tie up for lunch or dinner, and Gasperilla key is a nice place to dine or breakfast, I rented a golf cart when I was there.
Hi, I will have time off from Jan to Mar 2013. I own a 36' S2 sailboat that I keep in lake Ontario Canada. I live on the boat 5 months a year and am quite handy with repairs. I have a lot of sailing experence in fresh water, also I was part of a delivery from miami FL to lake Ontario. I am a 50 year old strait male, fit and healthy. Can you tell me more about your self. Ed
