Captain Wanted - Short Delivery Apr 13

Hi all -

I'm looking for a captain for a sailboat delivery (33') from Jacksonville, FL to southern coast of North Carolina (Moorehead City or Beaufort) in early April (looking at around 8 Apr departure, but that may shift left or right a little).

The catch is, your crew will be me, my dad and my brother. This is our first trip on the outside in a sailboat, and we'd like to have the extra experience onboard.

Please PM me for more details - we'd appreciate references.

Thanks!

Hey Nick,

I am not able to reply to your pm until I have 15 posts, but thanks for the message. I am shocked as well that I don't meet any sailors in the navy. As you said, I will be going to DH school and then WEPS on FORREST SHERMAN (DDG 98).

I wish I could help with your request here, but I'll get no leave at DH school. I'm also looking for a crew for a cold sail from Maine to Rhode Island on President's Day Weekend starting on 16FEB.

Well, good luck with your request,
Chris

Most of the delivery captains would not like your offer. Although owner is accepted as crew on board, he is the owner and tries to control the travel. In mediterranean area most of the delivery captains reject similiar offers.

Fair enough - so I submit the following. Despite the old quote that there's nothing more useless than a serving Naval Officer on a sailboat, I actually am one (a serving Naval Officer, not useless). I will take and follow the orders of the captain on the boat. Really, I'm hoping to learn as much as I can from them - getting the confidence and experience sailing outside is as important (if not more important) than delivering the boat.

And I'm providing rum.

A good delivery captain is a good "leader" with excellent seamanship. He should know how to work with the owner and his wife to their satisfaction. After all, the owner is his client. Customer is always right. The trick is how to make them feel like they are having their way, but in fact you are running the boat.

To OP, you should be able to find the captain that fits your need. But no rum until the boat is secured at the dock and not going anywhere for the nite. LOL.

I used to do lots of deliveries with the owners on board and teach in route, in fact I got many of my deliveries because I would. You will find Captains willing to accept your terms. If it wasn't for my health (heart transplant) I would be throwing my hat in.

Not to hijack the thread here (sorry jslade!) but I'm unable to send PMs right now...

Chris:
I'm very interested in your proposed passage and am wondering a) how far up in ME the boat is (I'm down in Boston, but willing to travel a decent way), b) can we be in RI on/by 2/18 (I fly out to the west coast on 2/19), and c) what kind of boat?
If you're not way up past Rockland and we could reasonably make the transit by that Monday then I'd love to send you my sailing resume and work this passage with you!
Many thanks,
David
(email in response so as not to further corrupt the OP's thread to: zarya1971 at gmail.com [@ instead of "at", all one word])

Not to hijack either, but with 22 years in the Navy I've never met a serving officer that couldn't follow orders and serve as crew when they were outside their area of expertise.

If I were a delivery skipper I'd have no problem with that.

How is the boat equipped, and what are your experience levels?
