Looking for crew for Florida to Texas trip.

Are you planning to go offshore or in the Ditch? If you''re going offshore, you''ll need to stay about 100 to 150 miles offshore until you clear the oil and gas rigs around LA. Suggest that you don''t wait too long into hurricane season to start the trip - or if you do leave later, you might want to take the ditch.

I single handed the Regatta de Amigos from Galveston to Veracruz, Mexico last June. Lots of oil and gas rigs out to about 150 miles. Tough to sleep if you''re single-handing. No hurricanes, but several thunderstorms on the way down with gale force winds. Only half of the fleet managed to complete the regatta.

In addition to a crew, you probably should have a back-up plan. This is particularly critical since your crew possibly won''t know each other''s capabilities.

Two friends brought a 56 ft steel ketch from Florida to Houston years ago. They were the only experienced sailors among a crew of eight.

They intended to sail but had an untested crew that did not know each other. Some rough weather hit. The six Sunday-sailors got in the way. They went into an ICW port and decided to motor the trip in the Ditch. But the mast did not fit under the next bridge.

They ended up arriving in Houston by bus and the boat was brought in by a professional crew and skipper ... after they had the masts taken down so they could motor in the Ditch.

Don''t know how big your boat is and if the above is a concern for you. You may already have checked the ICW charts for the bridge clearances.

I have a 57'' ferro-cement cutter/ketch. So far I have one other person going with me. He is a friend of my grandmother, but I am still looking for crew. A little worried about the weather, but the boat is heavier than most and with the right crew I know everything will be great. Just a little worried about doing it alone. Although I have help he is old and I could use another hand. Thanks for the info though I will keep it in mind.
