Northwesterner looking for sailing experience

Hi,

I live in Olympia, Washington. I am looking for opportunities to sail anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. I am self-employed and can adjust my schedule to take advantage of sailing opportunities. I am 63 years old, in good health, and I have been hanging around marine environments throughout my adult life. But I want to learn to sail! I am a good learner, and an agreeable fellow. Promise!

I do not have a boat. I plan to acquire a boat in 2007.

It might help you get a reasonable reply if you can state why it is that you have been around marinas for most of your adult life, but never owned a boat, yet now at age 63 want to learn to sail--ie. why now?

Also, if you are planning to buy a boat next year, why not take some sailing courses, and buy the boat now, begin sailing her in light conditions til you get it figured out a bit more, and take it from there?

I'm not suggesting that you not crew with others if an opportunity becomes available.

Not much in the way of "light" conditions available from here on out, not around here. Ya might go up on Sailing Anarchy to post your availabilty as crew. Most of the area racers hangout up there. That's where I got on as crew.

Hi and thanks for your good advice. I meant that I have been around water (marine environments) not marinas for most of my life. I have owned and used a variety of power boats, as well as personally powered small craft.

I am going to take sailing lessons shortly, but I still want to absorb what I can from experienced skippers who are willing to let me aboard.

I'll be posting on Sailing Anarchy as well.
