I just left New Bern. Seems like racing is the best way to get out on the water because they are always looking for crew. Also it's a great way to learn how to fine tune your setup. Took me a little while to get a ride on a boat but once you show up and do a decent job, you're sure to get plenty of invites back. If your wanting to start small there is the Oriental
Dinghy club which seems to be decently active. There website is towndock(dot)net/odc. You can also go to NYRA(dot)org to see a calendar of all the races that are scheduled by the varioius sailing clubs. This may help you plan your availability in advance. NYRA members seem to be pretty active as well. If your into mini cruising and possibly some races, there is a club called NSA (neusesailing(dot)com Neuse Sailing Association). I saw them out putting around all the time. Or, if you're in the service or retired there is Bancock Yacht club on the premises of Cherry Point (US Marine Base) that allows you to keep your boat for close to nothing (CHEEEAAAAP!!!!) with nice facilities. The best bet place to look into though is the Blackbeard Sailing club. They seem to be the most active club of all the clubs. It's also cheap to keep a boat there. However they are selective of who they allow to keep their boats there, as they really want people who will actually come down and sail their boats. Here is their site blackbeardsailingclub(dot)com.
