How to avoid sailing with "Captain Ron" ?

After reading:

www(dot)sailnet(dot)com/forums/showthread.php?t=37629

and

www(dot)sailnet(dot)com/forums/showthread.php?t=32791

What would be the best way to make sure you are not going to crew for an idiot and/or on an unsafe boat?

Charlie

Well, I have crewed for a few folks I've met on the internet. Some as far back as the mid 90's. I guess it's like anything in life. Talk to them a bunch, ask some questions, listen to your gut. And if you show up and the boat doesn't look seaworthy... bail out.
I've had good luck w/ lengthy phone conversations; eventually you can tell if someone is BSing you or not about their experience.

And if you've got some fairly wide ranging experience yourself, even if it's just daysailing or local racing, you can make a pretty good assessment.

David

PS. Wannna go sailing? I'm all set to go on my GF41; should be able to circumnavigate in a week or 10 days at the most. Why when I was running clipper ships......

LOL!!

GF41 = GoFast. OBVIOUSLY tongue in cheek!

Well you have three choices:
1. Capt Ron
2. Capt Wolf Larson. From the Sea Wolf by Jack London.
3. Someplace between the two.

While a lot of what you might really want to know is intangible, (ie: will we work ok together), there are some tangible indicators you can look for.

I suggested to the "captain Ron" I think you might be referring to in another thread some of the things he might provide to potential crew.

Among those might be:

references
survey of vessel in question
proof of insurance
a written and realistic passage plan
(researched, pilot charts, expected weather & conditions, time-table)
A written list of expectations and responsibilities.(this can be as complex as a contract, or as simple as a checklist, but should include such items as watch schedule, provisoining responsibilities, list of duties, personal declarations, such as no smoking/drinking/snoring, LOL) I think you get the point.

None of this is any guarantee; but a good plan and preparation is a good indicator of seriousness and possibly competance.

I did my first (brief) saltwater crewing with Alex of Giulietta, as many here are probably tired of hearing. Aside from some vagaries of the Portuguese baggage handling system, the experience was so positive that I have to keep my expectations in check that subsequent trips might be perfectly educational, but entirely "fend for yourself" affairs.

In other words, it's just as easy to be spoilt by a good experience in a well-skippered, well-maintained boat as it is to be soured by signing on with The Wreck of the Hesperus, Capt. Bligh commanding.

Thing is, other than some weakness in interpersonal relationships, Bligh was one hell of a good sailor & seaman, similar to Alex if posts here are accurate.

One thing I would like to point out is just because captkris is the subject of the posts I referenced I'm not "Ipso Facto" calling him "Captain Ron" or an Idiot.

It is the posts I reference, once again bring up this subject.

I don't think Alex's CN is so good

I realize Bligh was a good guy...maybe the best guy...to take an open boat halfway across the Pacific, but to deliver a production cruiser to the BVIs, maybe not so much. His better qualities seemed to emerge only under the duress of imminent death. Me, I prefer a more measured approach in a skipper.

Neither Ron nor Bligh were in fact bad skippers nor bad sailors, and in fact captkris might be a dang fine sailor (admittely Ron has some character flaws, but life is fun that way sometimes).

What gets my all up in my craw is it is absolutely the responsibility of the capt/owner of the boat to ensure the boat is properly equipped and seaworthy to a certain standard (name your standards of seaworthiness here)prior to setting a date to depart, shakedowns and breakdown cruises should have already been done prior to the arrival of unpaid crew, far enough in advance to allow them to get a refund / cancel tickets etc..
Unpaid crew duties do not and should not include large / long term maintenance including painting, storage other than personal gear and consumables for that specific passage.

Saying a unpaid crew 'volunteered' to help install a motor, paint the bottom and test the repairs is just wrong, what do you expect them to do, throw away more money, buy another plane ticket and go home?

How do you avoid all that, talk, talk, talk. If the capt isn't willing to put the unfront investment in talking to you and communicating all this prior to the trip - is that a skipper you want to put your life on?

I love working on boats, that's why I own one - my friends know that, and know I love working on thier boats for free as well (even head repair and bottom painting beat cutting grass). If you want 'crew' to do repairs, say so, you'll probably still get people wanting experience, just don't talk crap about blue water sailing when what you have is a hull and a dream.
