Here is an interesting story about Plum Gut: Plum Gut
The story is a little puzzling though as they were headed west to Little Neck Bay (north through the Gut). Then the author gets hurt and they head in to Greenport which means they would have had to turn around and go back through the Gut the other way to get into Gardiner's Bay and Greenport on the north fork.
It is worth bearing in mind that in adverse conditions the Gut has a bad reputation. My experience going through the Gut was quite unremarkable by comparison.

CalebD. Thanks for the story and the reminder.

From the story: "The wind, thirty knots or more"

No thanks to that! If it's blowing 30 knots I'm not going through the Gut. Any desired BFS posting will have to wait.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Well, I have been through Plum Gut quite a few times, occasionally got some standing waves, but nothing like that adventure. I hope to keep avoiding it. My last trip through Plum Gut this season the water was like glass, there was no wind whatsoever, and there was moderate fog. Piece of cake. Of course about a half hour later we got hit by a severe thunderstorm with gusty winds over 30 knots and lightning all around. But Plum Gut was fine.

montauk to glan cove

Hello All;
Had a lovely ride last weekend thanks to all aboard.

Brad; you did a thorough job as Skipper. You made no bad calls. You were pleasant and thoughtful regarding the members of your crew. The attitude you presented to your son showed much about the man inside.

Dave; your navagation abilities and attention to details was invaluable. Any station , any time.

Caleb; ditto, working lines and helm. Enjoyed our conversation.

Jon; On top of being a friendly competant sailor, you cook! Totally cool.

Wade; You''ll be an old salt by the time you are 20. Follow your dreams, enjoy the divers life. I was impressed ( though not suprised ) by your abilities.

Lucas; You did a superb job on the helm and a worthy line handler. And wasn't the bow lovely with the waves breaking over.

It was a pleasure. I would serve again with each and every one.

Blue Skies....Richard

Brad's 505 rules!
We did the 90 nm. to Glen Cove from Montauk with an overnight in Port Jeff. and dealt with gale force winds. All the crew did great and the skipper did even better by getting his boat to where its winter home will be.
The Perkins aka 'Perky' did its job of getting us west of Port Jeff but we all did the rest.
I am very happy to have signed on to do this trip with fellow sailnetters and enjoyed everyone's participation. Brad, Lucas and Wade were an inspiration to me. We did what what we set out to do in spite of small craft warnings on a 50' sailboat.
As the Florida license plate used to say we 'arrive(d) alive'.
It was a happy cruise even if the weather was not convinced we should be. Limits were pushed (for me at least) and we still arrived on time.
Sailing on the Hudson is an open invite to any/all of the crew or this trip when convenient.
Caleb D.
