I'm looking for a few VERY experienced sailors, especially ones who've done the race. This would be in the amateur category, no spinnaker.

Hmmm ... If I were to hazard a guess I'd say Around Long Island Regatta.

Not one of the more widely covered events i2f. Not too many entries from your neck of the woods.

I researched this regatta a couple of years ago with the intention of using my boat to enter. I found that the entry fee was around $500 and since about half of the race is in the ocean a life raft is required equipment for each boat which you can rent for the event for another $500. Since I am such a cheapskate that is as far as I went with that idea.
I am still tempted by the idea of this race and NOT a veteran of it NOR likely to be free to join you but you give very few details of you and your boat.
A few items of information might be helpful for others who might be interested in joining you, such as:
- boat year, make, size, sail plan (sloop, ketch etc.)
- when was rigging last updated
- equipment on board (radar, chart plotter etc.)
- how you plan to share expenses
- your sailing experience
- your preferences for crew (eg., only non-smoking, drug free, vegetarian lesbian republicans need apply)

Sorry my original note was so short and non-informative. I promise to do better.

Anyway, the Around Long Island Race (33rd Annual Around Long Island Regatta) will take place on Thursday, July 23. It starts in Brooklyn (Sheepshead Bay), runs along the south side of Long Island, rounds Montauk Point and finishes at Port Washington.

Caleb - it's not as dreadful as all that. Entry is $250. They accept either a life raft OR a dinghy. Thank you for listing relevant information. And thanks for the good wishes.

I'm not expecting to set any records in this one. I have a sloop-rigged 1999 Hunter 420 center cockpit (that rules out all the Hunter-haters), no spinnaker, 110 jib. Garmin 3010 chartplotter, autopilot, depth, speed. So with those specs, you can probably surmise this is more about fun than winning. And I'd seek crew with that same attitude. I would ask for donations toward defraying the cost.

The rigging is in good shape ( it's in Stamford -- Tom Anderson, chief rigger at Hathaway, Reiser and Raymond was on the boat to take a look at it recently).

I've been sailing since the late 80's, owned this boat 3 years. For a racer, I'm a pretty good cruiser.
