Need crew!!!

YES,

I know this is VERY early to ask...Yet, I need to find out if there is someone
who would like to crew next year (10) from East coast through the canal
to Sea/PDX or close by. Return air fare paid for. Reason for such an early posting is; buying the boat is determined by a response.

This is a very long trip, especially the bit from Panama to the Pac NW. Have you thought of shipping the boat to the West Coast? Depending on the size of the boat, time of year, fuel consumption, etc., it might not be that much more expensive, especially if the time in transit is considered.

Advice might be more to the point with additional details on the type/size of boat, planned departure times, time available for tranist, etc.

On second thought, you may not be looking for advice, only crew.

It sounds like having crew is going to determine what boat he buys. It would certainly help if he said what size boat he is expecting to get, since it appears he has no boat ATM.

Jim, I don't know many crew who can be relied on to show up every week for the beer can races, let alone whether strangers who commit to a voyage a year down the line will be willing, or able, to hold that commitment.

If getting crew is a deal breaker for your purchase--you'd better take hostages, and start now. Or, gamble on getting crew a month or so before the trip.

I'm writing because I have made this trip several times in the past. It's a much longer trip than you realize and more expensive.

First of all depending on the size of boat your costs through the "canal" will run anywhere from $1800. to $5,000. The canal has some interesting requirements your need to be aware of before making any hard and fast plans. Such as pilots, mooring lines, deckhands, etc. Then there is the infamous "DEPOSIT" - LOL ;o) I never did get mine back ...........

Next you have prevailing winds and current. Winds on that coast are going to predominate from the NNW making a northward sail difficult and currents on the California and Oregon coast are going to be southerly and average 2 to 4 kts. What this boils down to is if you wanna make Seattle from Panama either motor most of the way or sail to Hawaii first.

Lastly, trucking isn't cheap but that will depend on the beam of the boat, weight/displacement etc. Boats over 12ft in beam are appreciably more expensive to move and over 14 ft are almost impossible. So in purchasing a boat maybe you ought to look at a boat in Southern CA and truck it north. Also when choosing a boat don't forget about the Seattle weather. Not just the rain but the cooler weather most of the year, Southern CA it "ain't"

Do to many reasons I must cancel for (1) more year.
The plan is to leave FL. right after Thanksgiving.
Drop any crew off at any West-Coast port.
My final Port is Astoria, OR.
Seattle not a problem.
I can get a crew back from Seattle.
