Well Renae, why not use some of the advance money, buy yourself a small sailboat...say a 25-28 footer, and head "out there." Now that would be an interesting story for your publisher to publish and you wouldn't be dependent on other peoples time frames!

I'm considering that, but given that I have little experience in sailing that would be a bad move on my part. Then I would have to find a captain and crew and would be back in your shoes...

Read my post to Thomas a couple of days ago...

Going for a daysail for a few hours around Long Island Sound. I'll be on the boat tonight so I may go for a night sail or an early morning sail tomorrow before work (or both, strung together).

These things have to fit around kids' sports and other things. One finds the time slots that one can.

Not sure that's anything to write about. It's not like we're pulling up gold bars caught on the anchor or anything.

Not Necessarily. Go to bumfuzzle.com and take a read. These people sailed around the world with no more experience than you when they started. They went to Florida, bought a boat and completed their voyage about 5 years later. It's a good read in any case.

Yes, definitely a good read. They, however, wanted to make this their lifestyle while I just want to write a book. When I'm done with it and the trip, I'll move onto something else. Thanks for the link

Hi Yachts 66 (and others!). Your grand plan might work for me - I'm headed to Haiti next week to help as a doctor with the Cholera epidemic for a month or two. I plan in Feb/March to hitch a lift to mainland S America, preferably west coast via Panama and may visit some old friends in Chile/Argentina. If Southern Mexico is your launch location for the crossing I'd meet you there if you aren't cruising South first. Have crewed an Amel 54 Tahiti to Tonga via the Cooks...Bora Bora is a great island. Was also the medic aboard the fated ARC yacht Compromise trans-Atlantic a few years back so have had my experience with the elements when things go wrong! (story via google) I have a PADI Rescue Diver cert with plenty of dives as was a diving medic in Roatan and love to sail...always keen to learn more. Basics: FEMALE, 34, British.
