HELP WANTED: BOATING DOCK ATTENDANT
Boating Dock Attendant, Part Time (Recreation Attendant I)

Work Outside at Lake Merritt!
An excellent opportunity for a college student, or other adult, seeking part-time employment. Accepting applications for both seasonal (summer) and year-round employment. The Dock Attendant works one to five days per week including weekdays, weekends, and holidays with a maximum of 1,000 hours/year. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure the safety and enjoyment of patrons using the lake facilities. Assignments include the cleaning and maintenance of equipment, docks, and grounds, assisting and instructing patrons in the safe use of rental boats, tour boat operation, assisting instructors, performing boat rescues, testing renters for sailing competency, and enforcement of lake rules and regulations. Additional duties may be assigned as needed. Heavy lifting is required. Equipment includes: small motorboat, JY 15, El Toro, Opti, Sunfish, Laser, Capri 14, Catalina 14, Hobie 12, kayak, canoe, pedal boat, dragonboat, whaleboat, and rowboat.
Required Qualifications:
· 18 Years of Age
· Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade
· Basic swimming skills
· Certification in Basic First Aid & CPR desirable
· Positive customer service skills
· Personal Boating Experience
· Basic Sailing Skills or willingness to take the Basic Small Boat Sailing Class (offered free of charge)
· Outboard motorboat handling experience

Boat Rental Cashier, Part Time (Recreation Attendant I)

Cashier
The primary responsibility of this position is the collection and accurate accounting for all program fees and completion of required accounting reports. Assignments include maintenance of daily attendance records, assisting with registration and daily close-out procedures of all software, completing all records and reports as needed, enforcing all rules pertaining to the lake and facility, maintaining consistently good public relations with patrons, lending needed support to all staff in the routine of the job or in an emergency situation, assuming all assigned duties connected with the maintenance of the boating facility as directed. Additional duties may be assigned as needed. We are looking for honest candidates with good references to work in a boating atmosphere.
Required Qualifications:
· 18 Years of Age
· Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade
· Money handling experience
· Computer Experience (Windows-based applications)
· Positive Customer Service Skills
· Basic swimming skills
· Knowledge of boating and water sports desirable
· Certification in Basic First Aid & CPR desirable

HELP WANTED: Science and Boating Instructor
Science and Boating Instructor, Part Time (Recreation Attendant I)

Training planned for late February 2011. 10-30 hours/week Spring & Fall; 20-40 hours/week Summer season (mid-June through late August)
Position is for 12-35 hours per week Monday-Friday; March through mid-June and mid-September through mid-November. Sailing Into Science is an outdoor education program that provides Oakland youth with a hands-on experience utilizing Lake Merritt's unique environment for science and boating. Elementary school (primarily 5th graders) students experience rich entry points into the worlds of life science, earth science, physics, chemistry, and nautical science. Each class dedicates the morning to a science topic engaging in activities in the program's classrooms as well as experiments and observations on and around Lake Merritt. Afternoons expose students to various boating activities including pedal boats, kayaks, and dragonboats.
Required Qualifications:
· 18 years old
· Education: Minimum requirement is equivalent to completion of the 12th grade
· Certification in Basic First Aid & CPR (required by start date)
· Personal Sail or Muscle Powered Boating experience, boating instruction experience is a plus
· Outboard motorboat handling experience, Powerboating Safety Certification is a plus
· At least one year of experience leading or teaching youth
Additional Qualifications: Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese are highly desirable.
