Panama To Hawaii

As most know I am still recovering from cancer. I don't have my strength, or stamina 100%. We are looking for crew who can wrestle the main in a gale. You must be experienced, and be able to get to, and from the boat. I pay for everything else except for liquor. We are a dry boat when we sail.......i2f

What's the planned route? Season? I did this trip in April/May 2006. We ran the rhumb line (more or less) from Gulfito, CR to Hilo. It took 31 days and we burned 240 gal of diesel getting there. If I did it again I'd seriously consider going to the Marquesas and then to HI -- 2400 nm further, but probability of sailing is much higher.

Last year we went southwest, and lost the mainsail. It was blowing snot, and making no headway. We returned, and fixed the main. Then set off again , and passed Malpelo, but had to return again, because of health. Both times is was snotty. We were picked up, thrown about 20ft, and split a 1" teak grate on the return.

This year we will pass Punta Mala with a wide berth, and head mostly north with a wee bit of west until around 9, or 10 degrees, and head west. We only carry 100 glns. The boat sails well to weather until 20 knots, and then we have to crack off, so we are hoping to arrive with some fuel?

I see already a second storm is developing. Melanie, and I discussed yesterday morning of waiting out the season in San Blas. We still have about a week's worth of work to do. We passed through the canal last year this same day, today, and entered the Pacific, so I would really like to get going, but weather is everything........i2f

Why not sail out towards Tahiti, enjoy the summer (er, winter) outside of the cyclone box and head north to HI in November?

Unfortunately I am aware of the storm tracks. This is why I need to go as soon as possible. In March I was told to think about where to take my last breath. My goal is to get the boat home to the S.F. Bay area where I can sell the boat if the doctors are right. This will leave my wife comfortable financially for a long time. If she goes home it will last a life time

My plan is to sail under the storm track over the many decades, and then around it to Hawaii. If the batometer drops then sailing south as far as needed will be accomplished. Even if that means Tahiti......i2f

I wish I could join you. But it would mean leaving my wife alone while I was gone a month. She missed me greatly during the two weeks I delivered my own boat from Florida.
