Got my first crewing gig...

I bring my own inflatable pfd with harness and tether. Also a watch with an alarm so you can wake up when its your turn to stand watch. I also always carry a sharp knife, leatherman, small flashlight that I can keep in my pocket, and I like those little forehead lamps. Plus a dry bag for phones and stuff.

I plan on using my iPhone for alarm, etc. Thinking about buying a nav-app for fun. I'm trying to read up on the best options. I'm certainly not paying $50 for one. There are some good $10-15 ones.

Dunno about your iPhone, but my Droid seems to lose track of the time after it gets out of cell phone range. It can be set it manually, of course, but it was very disorienting the first time until I figured out what had happened. Dunno if that would have happened if the GPS had been turned on or not.

Bring two watch caps. I've had 'em literally sucked off my little pointed head.

Let me know what nav app you decide on. Would be great if someday OpenCPN was ported to a compatable operating system.

Don't forget a water-activated strobe for your inflatable pfd.

Gear that I like for offshore trips. Most of these have been mentioned.
1. Inflatable PFD w/harness
2. Strobe with flashlight that is attached to the PFD
3. Whistle attached to PFD
4. led flashlight that has a headband so your hands are free (the kind with red & white light)
5. Good foul weather gear
6. Sharp knife with halyard
7. Comfortable clothes
8. Comfort snacks ( I like lemon salt to flavor water )

When I go offshore I don't leave the cabin without the pfd on & I didn't leave the cockpit without tying in to the jackline. On night watch I tied onto the jackline even when in the cockpit.
