Got my first crewing gig...

A three day trip across the Gulf of Mexico. I can't wait! Should be exciting.

Any tips on what I should take? I have the Sperry's. I have a NorthFace jacket. Plenty of swimsuits, shorts, and t-shirts. Going to buy a NavApp for my iPhone (just for my fun). I only have a vest life jacket and am considering buying an inflatable (manual or automatic?). I have a good pair of binoculars. I have cheap sunglasses and cheap reading glasses. Probably need spares and something to attach them with.

What else?

I've made a number of these trips in the few of years and have never failed to have a ball. Most important thing to bring is a good attitude, but you seem to already have that. I find myself reading a lot when off watch and always seem to run out of books. I also bring anti-seasickness medication even though I've never been seasick because I can't stand the thought of letting down the team. I'm in the market for an inflatable PFD and just posted a query about manual vs. inflatable. My feet went numb during a trip north earlier this year, so my next purchase will be sea boots.

Thanks! I definitely have a can do attitude, and one that is willing to learn and do as asked on a trip like this. Never been seasick on my many day trips over the years. Funny what you say about books; the boat owner indicated it could cause seasickness. I'm sure I'll take books along as I love to read.

I'm following your PDF thread. I'm more apt to get an inflatable, as you never know what predicament you'll end up in.

Haven't sailed in the Gulf, but have noticed that it can get mighty cold sailing at night. Even heading to Bermuda, going through or south of the Gulf Stream, it can be nice to have a watch cap and fleece gloves sometimes. You already have the warm jacket. Boots - dry feet!- would also be a priority.

I would suggest investing in few things that will make your trip more comfortable. Rain in the middle of the night can make for a chilling watch, even in July.

Good set of fowlies.
Pair of sailing gloves.
Inflatable vest. (personal choice)
Wide brim hat with neck cover (sun shade)

Check to make sure the vessel has jacklines and harness.

+1 on good sailing gloves. Wearing them helps me feel less fatigued when at the helm during rough weather.

Also, comfy socks. Wearing no socks with boat shoes may look cool and salty and all that but keeping my feet warm means much more to me.

All of that and second on checking about harnesses.... In fact you may want to buy your own just in case - no telling about the condition of a rarely used harness kept on board for a long time.

Buying an offshore inflatable with a built-in harness might be the way to go but they are noticeably heavier when worn. Also remember that these things only 'count' as a valid PFD if they are being worn.

GREETINGS EARTTHLING. Ya going to get a water proof flashlight only a cheapy rom the doller store but use good bateries. buy a bike set use the white light for your bunk and the red for night-time STAY SAFE STAY WARM STAY DRY AND DON'T BUMP INTO ANYTHING. GO SFE

Thanks for the additional advice. There is a good jackline on board, and I'm definitely getting an inflatable life jacket. I'll be wearing it the entire trip.

I also have a decent pair of sailing gloves. Need a good hat. I don't like hats, but I'll suck it up.

Funny about socks, too. I hate socks, but they are definitely more comfortable with the boat shoes. Sperrys are falling apart inside anyway. I would just as soon go barefoot but the captain wants closed-toed shoes, which I will abide by and understand completely.

I have a fleece liner for my jacket. Wish I had pants. Might look for some just to be safe (and warm).

My inflatable PFD is one of those. It really isn't an issue but the SS ring can bang on things.

I also think a good pair of sailing gloves helps a lot.
