I'll be cruising Florida and prefer to anchor rather than use marinas. What is the availability of places to drop a hook?
W.L.
John Kretschmer responds:
W.L.,
Anchoragesare becoming scarce along the Florida coast as local and state governments try to squeeze money out of cruisers. However, if you're just stopping for the night, you can usually find a place to drop the hook. As far as long-term anchorages, well, here is something of a list (working from north to south): at St. Augustine, off the city docks and closer to the inlet; off Melbourne, anywherethey welcome cruisers; near Peanut Island, just off the mouth of the Lake Worth Inlet; there are several places to anchor in Biscayne Bay; the Keys offer many possibilities, including huge liveaboard anchorages at Marathon and Key West.
