Making It along the Way

One thousand dollars per month sounds reasonable as a cruising budget, but where does it come from if one is no longer working the nine to five? I'm an elementary teacher, and my wife is a registered nurse. We plan to get our licenses updated and transferred to a given destination, then sail there and work at whatever clinic or local school will have us.

Sue and Larry respond:

You definitely need to set yourself up with a cash reserve before you start cruising. Starting with nothing and hoping to make it along the way will only be stressful. In our case, we do have some income through our writing and we have some money saved. The key is being very careful with your expenses once you're out here.

We meet many cruisers who stop every once in a while to build up the cruising kitty. Everywhere we go there are help-wanted signs, so finding work is not a problem. In your case, it sounds like you both have some skills that would be easily transferable somewhere else. We're sure you will be able to find jobs in a location that allows you to live on your boat and work hard to save money before taking off on the cruise.

Best Regards,
Sue & Larry
