Lake Erie Islands?

Hello All,

I'm planning a trip with my buddy for Labor Day Weekend this year, we're hoping to take his Beneteau First 38 from Detroit down to the western Lake Erie Islands for the weekend with some guests. I know, I know, boating on the Great Lakes on Labor Day weekend is a terrible idea, but we both work for the government so it's the best time for us and we're used to dealing with idiots on the water.

Any recommendations on where to go/stay? We're both fairly new to the area but want to explore if we can. He's a member of the Detroit Yacht Club so he might get reciprocity somewhere, right? His boat draws 6'8" which I'm guessing would limit our anchorages somewhat, would that be right?

Thanks for all your help!

Joe

Call The Crews Nest at Put in Bay. They offer reciprocity. There's a lot to do there. Call early for dockage reservations. Rent a golf cart. Nice trip by water.

Re: Lake Erie Islands?

It may be booked up the tall ships are in that week for the reenactment of the war. The show is supposed to be a few miles west of west sister island.

Re: Lake Erie Islands?

I suspect it will be very tough during that time frame because of the bicentennial festivities. But, that could also add to your adventure!

Beware, the anchorage outside the mooring field at put in bay is known to have poor holding.

Re: Lake Erie Islands?

Thanks for the input! We'll have to see exactly how this'll play out. My buddy's parents are coming along, and they're kind of old, so we might have to drop them at a hotel for a few nights...
