Storage, Long Term

As if figuring out which is the right boat to go cruising isn''t confusing enough what do you do with life''s accumulations that won''t fit on that perfect boat?

I don''t think the local mini storage provides the best or most economical solution. Selling everything that doesn''t go onboard also may lead to future regrets.

Has anyone built their own mini storage? Bought a lot and put up a metal building that could be used as a garage later? Instead of a monthly storage expense you would have an appreciating asset. It would even be possible to keep a car which could be used on trips home.

Any thoughts, solutions, or precautions appreciated.

Storage, Long Term

John: We sold everything except our antiques,
paintings and collectables, and purchased a metal container like they use on container ships. It holds our car and all the stuff we wanted to keep. We put the container in a storage lot which costs 15.00 per month. The container we purchased for 800.00. We repainted it and sealed the doors with caulk.
The container was just set on the ground and should be ok for the 5 or so years we plan to be gone. We didnt want to stor our cars because the non use is not good for them but they would fit. So when we come back for a visit we just borrow a car or rent one if needed. We stored our stuff before for 2 years and when we came back all was just fine, even our oil paintings. Another thing is to make sure everything is packed very well and secure. One thing we did that was overkill was to weld the door shut. No key to loose. The containers are available nearly everywhere and included in the cost was the cost to move it.
