Financial Guidance?

I am new to the sailing community and I have just started reading these and other boards. It seems to me that many of you have questions regarding boat insurance, health insurance, budget, and other financial concerns that could be addressed by someone who specializes in helping cruisers manage their finances. Are their people out there that focus on you or is that a void that needs to be filled. I know financial advisors who focus on airline pilots, retirees of a specific company, lawyers, cpa''s, and the reason they do it is so that they have extensive knowledge of the issues those individuals face. It seems that cruising sailors have their own unique set of issues that could be filled nicely by a financial advisor focusing on just them.

By the way I am in the financial planning field but I am not here to solicit clients, I am merely trying to figure out if I could focus on helping people like you.

Financial Guidance?

Willy:

There are two ways to look at your question. If you mean "logistical" help re: finances, the premier mail handling services have matured into places where crews can have their taxes, documentation paperwork, and routine bills handled easily...at extra cost, of course. The ''standard of care'', as the medical profession likes to say, is to use St. Brendan''s Isle in N Florida.

OTOH if you are asking about financial advising, then cruisers'' needs are no different than any other group, except that a small portion of us may want to deal with arbitrage/foreign currency investing, given that we live off foreign currencies for a period of time. But in general, one person''s "cruising kitty" is another person''s "liquid assets", and one crew''s "long term financial plan" is another crew''s "retirement" or "sabbatical" plan.

So to a certain degree you are saying that there is a need for a small portion of cruisers to have someone who can fill a specific role. Someone who is well versed in foreign currency trading and arbitrage to help protect the assets in order to maintain purchasing power.

From reading this and other boards some people are looking for a sabbatical of anywhere from 6 months to a year which takes a certain skill in planning out how to accomplish that feat. Or some people are retiring to a new lifestyle. It seems that even within cruisers'' there are a number of different ways a "specialist" could help different segments. Thanks for you help Jack.

On a side note I have enjoyed your website. It is quite neat to see and read other people''s adventures. Thank you for sharing it with the rest of us.

Willy, glad to hear the website info is serving its purpose. It''s only there to ''pay it forward'' a bit, given the help I''ve received from others.

I''m not sure if you missed my main point, or if we just see it differently...but I don''t think most cruising sailors'' financial planning needs are that unique. The same short- and longer-term planning issues exist IMO whether the person quit work to pile aboad an RV, began running a volunteer program at the local church or is out sailing somewhere. (The number of sailors who are operating exclusively in foreign currencies and for extended periods of time is actually quite small, I''ve come to understand.)

Put another way, the financial planning needs are just as critical as with any other group...but also pretty much generic in nature. If you''d like to read an informative of how financial planning relates to vessel selection, and how cruise planning might fit within the longer period of financial planning issues, you might take a look at Beth Leonard''s Voyager''s Handbook. She''s done some very helpful writing on that topic, I think.

Jack,

Do you mind if I email you with a few more questions? I have come up with a few more questions I would like to ask of you. I understand if you would prefer not to and thank you for your input thus far.

I think it''s a really good idea. Mind you, I''m not a cruiser, I''m a wannabe, but I''m getting close, and so I have some tens of thousands of dollars that want handling (I know, that''s a shocking statement--NOONE wants to talk money around here!) For one thing, with a little research, you could provide some good numbers on the proverbial question--"what does it cost?" Sailors love to say, "Well, that depends," or "It costs what you''ve got," but, in fact, it''s a very answerable question (and there are some more or less precise answers out there if you look hard), but someone with some money/numbers sense and a bit of research could help detail it out and make it clearer what you can do where, on what kind of boat, for how much. Jack knows what it costs--he''s said somewhere that he keeps track of every dime--so he knows what a cruise on his boat, living the kind of life that he lives, doing the things they do costs--and he could probably print out a Quicken file and say where everything went. That''s a good start to cruise planning, I should think. Combine that with bill-paying/mail service, portfolio management, currency updates, cost-of-living updates for various cruising grounds, research and advice on insurance matters (boat and health)...I think Jack''s right that a lot of it is generic, but I also think you''re right in that there''s a benefit to tailoring the financial advice to the client--and cruising is a BIG variable (I should think). I''ll be your guinea pig. I''ll put your logo on my mainsail...One question may be, a lot of cruisers probably have generic money managers of some type--could you convince them that your sailorcentric approach would be sufficiently beneficial to them to switch? But it sounds attractive to me.

Dave.

Financial Guidance?

I had never heard of Sea Clear, so I downloaded the program. Since I do not have charts in this computer (my office), I will need to load them on the laptop I use aboard Gambier, an Eastbay 43 (2002), which I cruise in FL and Bahamanian waters.

Which chart (s) on CD''s do you recommend?

Wow...that''s some thread drift, from financial issues to nav CDs! Ed, I think SeaClear takes most of the raster-type chart CDs - Maptech, even NOAA charts and scanned charts that you make yourself.

If Matt & Norma Jean (Matt''s often known as Old Rotten Fish from his ham call sign) are still at Lighthouse Point - they last owned a Morgan OI 41 - please pass along Christmas Greetings from the Tylers, who happen to have rendezvous''d in St. Pete for the holidays.
