Where not to go on Lake Mich

What ports hve you found to unfriendly stops? My vote is Harbor Springs, MI. very picturesque, but a town of snobs. If you like pretentiousness and snobbery this is your cup of tea. Even the store clerks look down on you if you are dresssed in shorts and t shirt. You really do need to wear a polo and be sure to wear docksiders with socks.

I''d avoid Waukegan, IL as well, there''s a certain individual that likes the harbor and surrounding 30-50 miles to himself! This guy is very contentious!

I agree Waukegan could be better. We used to do LMSS double hander out of there and the yacht club was not particularily hospitable to those of us in the race.

Agreed that Waukegan is totally inhospitable. Last time I was there it made me sick! As Denr points out, sailors are best to stay clear of the area -- lest your boat get puked on by visiting Chesapeake sailors whose inner ears don''t like the chop that 350 miles of open water produce on Lake Michi Gami. (That 4am alarm clock didn''t help either!)

I also advise staying clear of South Haven. It''s so crowded no one goes there anymore.

I like South Haven, though your right, it is crowded. I find sort of New Englandish.

I have been hearing lots of stuff about the WYC having big problems. I know my YC has had a number of refugees join us. I understand it is not a good place for sailors.

c25 - I also hail out of Racine aboard Trav''ler. I belong to the Racine Yacht Club and would encourage any L Mich boaters to stop by our club. We don''t care if one is a member of a YC or not, they are always welcome. If visiting, do not enter the club thru the north pass as it is very shallow.

In the southern half my favorite is Port Washington. Up north I think my favorite is Northport or Beaver Island.
