Greek Island Advice

I recently bare boat chartered for a week in the Greek Islands. It was a wonderful experience. Each harbor was more sceninc than the one before. My plan has always been to purchase a boat and spend a year or two cruising these Greek Islands. I hoping to get insight from someone who has done this themselves, or knows of someone who did. I was there in late October and it seemed like most of the charter companies were getting ready to sail to shipyards in Athens for the winter. Is this necessary? Also would I be making a hugh mistake in purchasing a boat already over there, as opposed to buying here and shipping (or sailing) it over there?
