Looking to sil up to Falmouth and cruise the SE coast in mid-August, any words of wisdom appreciated.

Radar, gps, bag of potatoes. When your power quits, and you''re in the fog, keep throwing potatoes. When you don''t hear a splash, you''re near a ledge. Otherwise get your tides figured out (20+ foot in the Bay of Fundy with some pretty wild whirlpools), a good set of charts and make sure you know where the CAT (high-speed catamaran that runs Bar Harbor, ME, to Nova Scotia) runs and stay away from its route. They''ve managed to kill one lobsterman in a wooden boat in the fog......

I am from Nova Scotia, and on of the big things i hate is the fishing gear. The fisherman have alot of surface gear and rope that floats on the surface or just below the surface of the water. Its not like some of the gear i have seen in the states were the extra line just sinks. So for the protection of your prop, i would have to say keep a close watch around the shore and when around fishing gear! I hope this is of some help!

FOG, FOG, FOG, & more FOG. Read today''s Sailnet article on fog. Once you get accustomed to it ( if in fact that ever happens) you will learn the neccesity of always knowing your position. MOSQUITOES, MOSQUITOES & more MOSQUITOES. Get about a gallon of "skin so Soft" from Avon and apply liberally. Having said this there is no better cruising area in North America. I have been cruising here for the last three years and haven''t seen 20% of whats to be seen.--Good luck & enjoy!

p.s. make sure you also have screens for your hatches and ports.
