Charts Online - Fools Gold??

I've seen and heard a few people mention that they are able to get most of their charts off the Internet without needing to purchase expensive hard copies.

Does anyone know of a real source for this or is this the pot of navigational gold at the end of every cruiser's rainbow?

Try www.maptech.com and follow their instructions for downloading. Worked for me

I would still recommend getting a good waterproof/resistant printout of any charts you need for your local area, as if the computer your electronic charts are on fails, you will need the hard copy versions.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

NOAA has "raster" charts for all the USA on their website. They are in the process of adding the electronic versions of all the charts.

These are the same charts that you used to have to purchase through Maptech. The exclusivity agreement that NOAA had with Maptech for doing the charts expired, so the charts are now public domain, available on the NOAA website. Or you can buy them for a couple hundred dollars per region if you like.....

There is also a viewing program available for free on the NOAA website.

I just purchased a complete, according to seller, NOAA chart set off E bay for about $15.on DVD,updated june 2006,charts appear to be legitimate, matching upwith my own charts of western gulf coast. It included a generic free chart viewer called SeaClear. It seems fine as a viewer,I'm waiting for a serial cable adapter to see how well it interfaces with my GPS.

noaa charts for free

I am presently using the free noaa raster charts with SeaClear and have found it to be a reliable navigational - not just viewing - tool. SeaClear is limited in its features, but it does the mnost important thing - plots you on the chart right where you are at the moment. You will need a GPS that will work with your computer. I use a reciever I got from www.gpsonline for $70. It is USB and will only work with a computer and appropriate software like SeaClear, but it works great. The main drawback is that I am presently in Canadian waters and do not have raster charts so I must simply use the paper charts.

I have a Garmin gps 12 with a serial to usb adapter for my laptop and a copy of Sea Clear 2. I downloaded the charts installed them on Sea Clear and hooked up the GPS with G7towin (in the same directory as Sea Clear). G7TOWIN works fine and sees the GPS on com 6 but when I turn it off and start SeaClear it will not work. At my wits end, any suggestions?
