Just curious how many of you blue water cruisers have ever came across or observed a cap-sized catamaran? I know that this is most likely to happen due to operator error, but can happen due to other circumstances. Thanks for the input.
My father''s boat was hit with the mast from one as it capsized. He was anchored in a rhodestead in the Bahamas during a storm. The winds were very gusty and shifty between 30 and 40 knots. The cat was swinging around on its mooring and ended up sufficiently across the wind that a gust was able to capsize it. That was under bare poles. Its never left me feeling warm and fuzzy.
During a trip to Florida a few years back I saw a cat in a yard that had capsized. It had been salvaged and been lifted out of the water upside down.
