Best Place to Start a Sailing Blog for Cruising

Hello. My husband and I have recently purchased our liveaboard boat, Sirena, a Tayana 55, which we have sailed from Bellingham WA to San Franciso last week. We're wrapping things up in our old home now and preparing to move aboard and start our circumnavigation at the end of this year.

My question is...where is the best place to host a sailing blog? I have read some blogs by others, and Google was recommended to me by one liveaboard. I just wanted to hear opinions on what might be the most user friendly place and how to get one started. I have never blogged anything, don't even do Facebook or any of that, prefer frankly to live life rather than report on my life, but we do have friends and family who wish to keep up and this will be simpler than sending out emails. So I welcome your input. Thanks!

Google Blogspot is as good as it gets. I like the way it deals with pics. which are posted on your blog then stored in a separate file in Google photos.

Probably the least likely operation to suddenly disappear which happened to me twice 10 years ago.

Wow I'm so jealous and happy for you.

Check out a site called webs.com I've been using it for a blog-ish and message board for about 7-8 years. It will let you do all your own graphics, multiple pages, photo albums. Its really very good, and its free.

cheers and good luck

It would appear that Google Blogspot and Blogger are the same place now that they are both owned by Google. I use Blogger and have for years, it works quite well.

The question that you did not ask but I will is: what is the purpose of your blog? If it is only to inform a small group of friends then I would just blog on Facebook. You don't need to go to the trouble of setting up a separate blog. On the other hand if you are trying to attract a larger audience then what you really need is to mirror your blog on a whole bunch of sites. This can be done automatically using a tool such as Onlywire. Set up an account with Onlywire, then use it to create blog accounts on all the other blogging sites you intend to use. When you post your original post the system then goes out and posts that post on all the other sites. You might also consider using a tool such as Google Feedburner - this will also help repost your blog and provides for email subscriptions. Finally, if you want some feedback on how you are doing you should also consider using Google Analytics - this will give you statistics (as does Feedburner) on who is reading your blog.

BTW all of the above except for Onlywire are free.

But as a starting point - unless you have the desire to become an author - I would just use Facebook. You could also setup a Facebook page for you boat as opposed to your personal Facebook page.

She answered this in the last paragraph: "...we do have friends and family who wish to keep up and this will be simpler than sending out emails."

I did the same thing. Our blog is really only to let family and friends know what we're up to. It doesn't have to win any design awards, just inform.

If you just want text, simply make up a group email list. If you want to add graphics, then go with a blog, unless all your friends and family are facebook users already.
