Lucky Dog!--Sailing with Pets!

If you insist on taking your pet sailing with you, at least have the good sense to fasten a tether to its collar/flotation gear to keep it aboard the boat. This puppy:

almost didn't make it because his lame-o owner didn't bother with a tether. For more on the story see (click on) Puppy Overboard!

We sailed with two English Springer Spaniels for many years without a mishap because we kept them tethered. Being water dogs, they had no hesitations about leaping off the side of the yacht to defend us against encroaching Pelicans or other widlife or join us for a swim--fortunately, however, only while we were anchored and had no difficulty recovering them, one at a time, with our Forespar outboard motor lifting crane! An accidental DOB (dog overboard) while at sea would have been tragic.

A Word to the Wise....

I did a 9.5 year circumnavigation with a German Sheppard size dog without incident, long before the word tethered was applicable to yachting. I found it a much bigger problem entering countries with rabies restriction related regulations. If you sail with your pet to these countries you risk them destroying your pet on a whim, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. It is actually quite expensive to cruise the Eastern Caribbean islands these days with a pet because of all the vet visits for the pet's health certificates that many islands require. One friend won't even go to Bequia, one our favorite islands, because of their attitude toward pets.
Just a head's up for those considering cruising these islands with a pet.
