Fl to Ill up the Misssisippi trip
I''m not sure how far up the river your wanting to go, but let me tell ya.
I''ve been stuck here in Mississippi for the past few months. Not knowing anyone here and getting bored quite often I find myself heading to the casinos in Vicksburg way too often.
After being abused at the craps tables I get my lunch or dinner comp and head to the resturaunt overlQQking the Mississippi river. I always get a window seat so I can observe the action on the water.
Some things I''ve notice are; the current is too swift to sail it upstream. The size of debris comming down stream can be massive. Bunched up masses of trees being the biggest obsticle. Let me emphasize "TREES" not shrubberys, not twigs, But huge blunt waterlogged projectiles. Also, the trees I have seen stuck and not moving are all pointing downstream, just waiting to inpale a non suspecting fiberglass boat comming upstream.
Things also to consider about going up river with a single 8hp, the shear key for the prop is very small on a 8hp. You will have this baby winding RPMs you never thought it was capable of and the slightest little branch and your shear key is history, leaving you helpless and at the currents mercy.
If there happens to be a heavy rain up north the debris increases and so does the current. I would be suprised if a 8hp would be able to push a 24 footer upstream.
There are sights on the web that give up to date details and information on river conditions.
If you like your boat, have it hauled up and sail it down. If you do decide to try the trip be sure your insurance is paid up.
